Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). She made her first appearances on television as Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne. Her parents, however, were not keen to let her take on acting roles until she was older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry states that she did not want to become an actor during highschool but decided to start playing as a way to make friends during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness caused Perry home to California, where theater jobs were available. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015, she starred alongside Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on ABC's political thriller Scandal that starred her father. That same year she portrayed a child version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a youthful version. Despite having a family connection to the character she received the role via an audition.
