Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. Perry did not decide to consider a career in acting until after she had reached adulthood, as her parents were concerned about the adverse effects that stress could be a cause of. Perry acknowledged that she was not comfortable acting in high school. However, she began performing as a means to connect with new people in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness brought her back to California again where she began to work on stage. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry starred in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. Her father portrayed her in the ABC drama Scandal. The character she played was a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. She was cast in the role despite her close relationship with the character's family.
